Andrew Garfield is very cringy in his approach to the character and the best thing I can really say about his character arc largely revolves around Denis Leary's eerie and ominous manifestations as Peter goes against the character's dying wish in the previous film and consistently puts Gwen Stacy in more and more danger. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a big let-down over the first film of this abruptly ended series. The characters are largely poorly acted by actors not receiving the same amount of direction as they did in the previous film, the story is predictable and not that great and overall the writing and action sequences left much to be desired.įor a more in-depth review with some mild plot spoilers. It's a shame because this could have been a good series with a new team. I think this sequel and it's problems makes the first installment weaker when weighing both of them.
However, it's nice that in a movie titled "Spider-man" you are thinking mostly about the titular character and not the villain. They are nothing like their comic book counterparts and are just mostly caricatures. Sadly, all of the villains are completely dumb and comical. I also think the Spider-man effects in this movie outshine a lot of the ones in the original Sam Raimi "Spider-man" films.Īndrew Garfield and Emma Stone have excellent chemistry and they are the heart of this movie. The action sequence in Time Square is AMAZING (pardon all the puns). However, they did do that to a lesser degree in the first movie, so I don't see what the big deal is. It is dense with a lot of extra stuff that was obviously in there to bait for a sequel. The movie itself is pushing 2.5 hours, which is a lot for this type of movie. I think a lot of people are really down on the second "Amazing Spider-man"-and they have a reason to be, BUT I don't think that those things take away from what is a pretty enjoyable movie.
